Sölden is the Ötztal valley's flagship ski resort, pairing a large winter ski area with two glaciers that reach 3,340 m. It is one of the few places in the Alps where lift-served skiing regularly starts in autumn, and the Alpine World Cup opener is held on the Rettenbach glacier. The village sits at 1,350 m and is equally known for its lively apres-ski scene.

Common questions about Sölden

Is Sölden open in early December?

Historically the snow is there: in 15 of the last 15 winters Sölden had a 30 cm or deeper base at mid-mountain (2,284 m) in the first half of December, with a median depth of about 81 cm. The lifts themselves open ~25 Sep (estimated). (15-season record, computed 8 Jul 2026)

How high is Sölden?

The base sits at 1,350 m and the lifts reach 3,340 m, with most skiing around the 2,284 m mid-mountain level. The glacier terrain at the top is what keeps the snow dependable outside the core winter months.

How do I get to Sölden from Innsbruck Airport?

Innsbruck (INN) is the nearest airport at 80 km, about 1 h 06 min by road. Public transport takes about 2 h 05 min with 3 changes. The full comparison, including other airports, is in the Getting there table above.

When does the 2026/27 season start at Sölden?

Sölden has not confirmed its 2026/27 dates yet. Based on past seasons we estimate opening around 25 Sep and closing around 2 May; both dates are estimates until the resort announces. (season dates checked 8 Jul 2026)

Does Sölden have a glacier?

Yes - Sölden has glacier terrain reaching 3,340 m, which is why its season starts far earlier than at valley-level resorts and why late-season snow holds up well.

How reliable is the snow at Sölden in January?

Very: in 15 of the last 15 winters there was a 30 cm or deeper base at mid-mountain throughout January, and the median mid-January depth is about 126 cm. (15-season record, computed 8 Jul 2026)
